What Actually Happens in a Russian Banya

Most people book a Banya without a clear idea of what they are walking into. Here is the sequence, start to finish, and the parts that surprise first-timers.

It is a sequence, not a room

The single biggest misconception is that a Banya is a hot room you sit in. It is not. It is a paced cycle of heat, work and cooling, repeated a few times, and the pacing is done by a person rather than a clock on the wall.

That is why a Banya session runs 90 minutes for the Classic and 120 for the Premium. Most of that time is not spent in the heat — it is spent moving between the heat, the rinse and the rest phase, which is where a lot of the effect comes from.

The birch venik

A venik is a bundle of leafy birch branches, soaked before use. The therapist uses it to move hot air against the skin and to work over the back, shoulders and legs. It is not a whipping in any painful sense — the sensation is closer to being pressed with something warm and damp.

If a place advertises a Banya and the venik is hanging decoratively on a wall, you are looking at a steam room with a Russian name. The venik work is the technique that defines the treatment.

The cold rinse is not optional

Between rounds you cool down properly. This is the part first-timers most often want to skip and the part that makes the cycle work — going straight from heat back into heat is just sitting in a hot room for a long time.

The contrast is abrupt and it is meant to be. After the first round it stops feeling like a shock and starts feeling like the point.

What to expect afterwards

Expect to want to sit still for a while. There is a rest phase built into the session for exactly that reason, and it is worth using rather than getting dressed and leaving immediately.

Drink water. Avoid a heavy meal straight afterwards. Beyond that there is no special aftercare.

Who should not book one

A Banya is a demanding heat experience. We ask every guest about medical conditions and pregnancy before a session, and our therapists will adjust it or advise against it where that is the right call.

If you have a heart condition, blood pressure that is not under control, or you are pregnant, raise it when you call. We would rather have that conversation on the phone than at the door. This is a wellness treatment, not medical care — we make no claims about it treating any condition.
